Description
Small-scale panels for private devotion, frequently of the Madonna and Child, were a genre that remained characteristic throughout Bellini's career. Signed on the cartellino on the parapet. There is a resemblance to the Virgin and Child in the San Zaccaria Altarpiece of 1505. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, there were attributions to followers of Bellini (Bissolo, Catena and Pseudo-Basaiti), and some more recent critics have considered it a late studio work. Tempestini (1999) considers it Bellini’s latest surviving half-length Madonna (about 1510). The picture is unrecorded before 1833, when it is listed in a Borghese inventory.
