Description:
This is the central panel of the three paintings representing the battle won by Florence against Siena allied with Visconti, the ruling family of Milan. It took place on June 1st 1432 in San Romano, half way between Florence and Pisa. The picture shows the conclusive combat between the captains of the two armies: Niccolò da Tolentino unseating Bernardino della Ciarda. The panels were first recorded in a Medici inventory of 1492 and evidently formed part of a decorative scheme in the newly built Palazzo Medici in Florence. They are usually dated to the mid-1450s. They show the fairytale atmosphere typical of the International Gothic, but also an emphasis on mathematical perspective, characteristic of the Renaissance.
