Description:
The visually coherent Franciscan church belies a complex history of construction that spanned nearly 200 years. Despite three distinct building phases, the church and its two attached cloisters preserve the simplicity that is attributed to a design of Nicola Pisano (by Vasari). Jacopo Celega (died 1386) was the architect of the campanile (1396), one of the tallest in Venice. He, and later his son Pietro Paolo, may have supervised the entire second building campaign (1361-1396). In the early 15th century, the friars engaged builders to complete the new church, in particular the last three bays towards the present entrance façade. One of the greatest architectural glories of the church is the octagonal apse with multilevel, bifurcated glass, and the carved, Istrian stone altar (choir) screen (by the workshop of Pietro Lombardo, 1475), a rare inclusion in an Italian church.
